One of the most frequently cited physical details from the 1967 Shag Harbour incident is the reported presence of thick yellowish foam on the water where witnesses believed the descending lights had entered the sea. Unlike the lights themselves, the foam was a tangible feature reportedly observed by police officers, fishermen and search crews. Yet its evidential value is often overstated. The foam could support the claim that something unusual disturbed the water at the reported location, but because no sample was collected, preserved or scientifically analysed, it cannot identify what produced it or establish that any craft—terrestrial or otherwise—entered the harbour. How searchers described the foam
The earliest accounts consistently state that rescuers reached the reported impact area expecting to find survivors from a downed aircraft. Instead, they found an elongated patch or trail of yellowish foam but no wreckage, fuel slick, bodies or floating debris. Descriptions of the foam vary in later retellings. Some witnesses recalled a broad strip stretching across the water, while others emphasised its unusual colour and thickness rather than its precise dimensions. Experienced local fishermen reportedly remarked that it did not resemble the ordinary white foam they commonly encountered during rough weather. Importantly, the foam was reported in the context of an active rescue operation. Searchers interpreted it as evidence that something had recently disturbed the water, not as proof of an unidentified craft. Could the foam have had ordinary causes?
By itself, yellow or brown sea foam is not inherently unusual. Marine foam forms when organic compounds released by algae, plankton and decaying marine material act as natural surfactants. Wave action then traps air within this material, creating stable foam that can accumulate in long streaks or windrows on the sea surface. Several ordinary mechanisms could therefore produce foam resembling at least part of what witnesses described:
- Natural marine foam generated by breaking waves acting on organic matter.
- Algal blooms, which can create yellowish or brown foam when the organisms die and decompose.
- Currents and wind, which concentrate floating foam into long surface streaks.

None of these mechanisms can be confirmed for Shag Harbour because the reported foam was never chemically examined. Equally, none can be confidently excluded simply because witnesses considered the appearance unusual.
What the foam could actually prove
The strongest evidential interpretation is modest rather than dramatic.
If the contemporary reports are accurate, the foam supports three limited conclusions:
- Searchers reached a specific area of water where they observed an unusual-looking surface feature.
- Multiple people independently reported seeing that feature during the rescue effort.

These points help explain why authorities treated the incident seriously. The foam gave rescuers a practical search location even though they found no aircraft wreckage.
However, the foam does not establish what caused the disturbance. Foam can result from many physical and biological processes, and visual appearance alone cannot distinguish between them.
Why the missing sample limits every conclusion
The greatest limitation is that no preserved sample is known to exist.
Without a retained specimen, investigators could not perform even basic forensic tests, such as:
- identifying biological material from algae or plankton;
- detecting petroleum products or aviation fuel;
- analysing dissolved chemicals;
- searching for unusual metals or industrial contaminants;
- comparing the material with ordinary local sea foam.
Because none of these analyses were possible, later claims about the foam’s composition are speculative. Assertions that it was chemically unusual, corrosive, evidence of propulsion, or linked to an extraterrestrial vehicle cannot be verified from the historical record. Likewise, sceptical claims that it was definitely ordinary sea foam also exceed what the surviving evidence can demonstrate.
The absence of physical testing transformed what might have become forensic evidence into an eyewitness observation whose interpretation depends almost entirely on memory and later testimony.
Why the foam remains significant—but not decisive
The yellow foam remains one of the most intriguing aspects of the Shag Harbour incident precisely because it occupies an uncomfortable middle ground between anecdote and physical evidence.
Unlike the lights in the sky, the foam was reportedly observed directly by rescuers who had travelled to the scene. That makes it more than a purely visual astronomical report. At the same time, unlike recovered wreckage or a preserved material sample, it cannot be independently re-examined decades later.
As a result, the foam strengthens the historical case that searchers encountered something they regarded as unusual at the reported location. It does not identify the source of that disturbance, prove that a craft entered the water, or provide evidence for an extraterrestrial vehicle. In evidential terms, it marks where investigators believed something had happened, but not what that something was.
