Introduction
The most specific version of the Project Mogul explanation for the Roswell debris is not simply that it came from “a weather balloon”, but that it probably originated from a particular lost balloon train launched in early June 1947. The candidate most often identified is the New York University balloon array commonly called Flight 4, launched from Alamogordo and tracked towards the Corona area before contact was lost. The case is significant because it offers a concrete explanation that matches the timing, location and unusual construction of the debris. At the same time, it remains a probability rather than a certainty. No surviving serial number, recovered instrument or contemporaneous document conclusively links the Foster ranch debris to that specific launch. What Albert Crary’s diary records
One of the most important primary sources is the field diary kept by geophysicist Albert P. Crary, who directed the scientific operations associated with Project Mogul’s early balloon work.
The diary entry for 4 June 1947 has become central to the debate because it records that planned balloon operations were disrupted by cloud cover. Crary noted that there was “no balloon flight” because of the weather, but he also described flying a regular sonobuoy using a cluster of balloons with successful reception on the ground. Supporters of the Mogul explanation argue that the diary distinguishes between an intended full experimental mission and the simpler balloon cluster that was actually launched. In this reading, the balloon array later designated as Flight 4 was nevertheless released, even if the day’s programme differed from the original plan.
Critics argue that the same diary indicates that no formal Mogul flight occurred on 4 June, making the later Air Force identification internally inconsistent. The diary therefore supports the existence of a balloon launch on that date, but it does not by itself prove that the recovered Roswell debris came from it.
Why the projected route points towards Corona
The strongest circumstantial evidence concerns the balloon’s projected path.
Tracking records reconstructed from the launch indicate that the balloon cluster travelled east-north-east from Alamogordo towards the Corona region of New Mexico. According to later reconstructions by Project Mogul participants, the tracking stations followed the balloon until equipment failures caused it to disappear from observation while it was still approaching the area where W. W. “Mac” Brazel later discovered scattered debris. This geographical coincidence matters because the debris field described in July 1947 consisted largely of lightweight materials spread across a broad area rather than heavy aircraft wreckage. A long train of balloons, radar reflectors, cords and lightweight instrument components breaking apart after descending into open ranch country would be expected to produce exactly this kind of dispersed field.
Equally important is the chronology. Brazel reported finding the material well before the publicity surrounding the “flying saucer” announcement in July. Why Flight 4 remains probable but unproven
The identification of the Roswell debris with Flight 4 rests on several independent pieces of evidence rather than a single decisive document.
Among the strongest points are:
- the existence of a June balloon launch that was not recovered;
- a projected flight path towards the Corona area;
- debris descriptions involving foil, rubber, sticks, cord and radar reflector components consistent with Mogul equipment;

However, important limitations remain.
No surviving inventory identifies the recovered debris by serial number. No preserved fragment can be matched scientifically to Project Mogul hardware. The surviving field documentation from 1947 is incomplete, and some relevant military records were later destroyed or lost, preventing definitive reconstruction. Historians therefore distinguish between consistency and proof. The evidence consistently points towards a missing early June balloon train, but it falls short of demonstrating that this particular launch unquestionably landed on the Foster ranch.

Independent researchers have reached varying conclusions.
