Why hearsay differs from eyewitness testimony

A person who says, “I saw a crashed craft,” provides direct testimony that can be questioned, compared with earlier statements and evaluated for consistency. By contrast, someone who says, “Barnett told me he saw a crashed craft,” is testifying only that Barnett made the statement—not that the event itself occurred.

Measured against ordinary historical standards, the Barnett body story remains a weak evidential foundation for claims about recovered alien bodies.
Its influence stems from its narrative importance rather than its documentary strength. It helped establish the now-familiar image of a crashed flying saucer containing small humanoid occupants, but it did so through delayed second-hand testimony rather than contemporary first-hand evidence.
