Introduction
Claims that a secret aircraft crash near Roswell was erased from the historical record often rest on one central argument: if the paperwork is missing, the government could have hidden the event. Federal investigations into the surviving records reached a more limited conclusion. They found that some Roswell Army Air Field administrative files were indeed destroyed under unclear circumstances, but they also found no contemporary accident report, operational record or inter-agency documentation matching the alleged crash of a crewed aircraft or an unknown vehicle. The distinction matters because missing records and evidence of a concealed crash are not the same thing. The surviving documentary record is incomplete, yet the available accident files, military reporting requirements and contemporaneous documents provide a basis for assessing what would ordinarily have existed had a military aircraft crashed near Roswell in July 1947.
What the federal records search examined
In 1994, at the request of Congressman Steven Schiff, the U.S. General Accounting Office (now the Government Accountability Office, or GAO) undertook an unusually broad search for records relating to the Roswell incident. The investigation extended beyond Air Force files to include material from the Department of Defense, FBI, CIA, National Security Council and other agencies. The GAO focused on two practical questions:
- whether Army regulations in 1947 required reports for aircraft accidents;
- whether any government records described an aircraft crash near Roswell that matched later claims.
The investigation concluded that Army regulations required reports on military aircraft accidents and that such reports were intended to be retained permanently. By contrast, officials stated there was no comparable reporting requirement for the recovery of a weather balloon or similar balloon equipment. The search recovered only two contemporaneous 1947 records directly referring to the Roswell event:
- a July 1947 history compiled by the 509th Bomb Group and Roswell Army Air Field stating that the recovered “flying disc” was determined to be a radar-tracking balloon; and

No additional classified or previously withheld records examined by the GAO described a hidden aircraft crash or the recovery of an unknown craft. The documented New Mexico crashes of July 1947
One way to test the hidden-crash hypothesis is to compare it with documented aviation accidents from the same period.
The GAO reviewed the Air Force Safety Agency’s accident records and identified four military aircraft accidents in New Mexico during July 1947. All occurred after 8 July, the date on which Roswell Army Air Field publicly announced the recovery of a “flying disc.” These accidents involved conventional military aircraft near Hobbs, Albuquerque, Carrizozo and Alamogordo. Only one was fatal. None matched later accounts of a mysterious crash outside Roswell, and none involved an unidentified vehicle. This finding does not prove that every accident would necessarily have been recorded perfectly. It does show, however, that the military accident-reporting system was functioning and that accidents elsewhere in New Mexico generated the expected documentation. The absence of a comparable Roswell accident report therefore requires an explanation.
The official explanation advanced by the Air Force was that no aircraft accident occurred because the recovered material came from a balloon system rather than a military aeroplane. Why missing files do not establish a concealed crash
The strongest argument advanced by proponents of a concealed crash is that important Roswell records no longer exist.
The GAO confirmed that some records had indeed been destroyed. Among the missing material were Roswell Army Air Field administrative records covering 1945–1949 and outgoing message files from 1946–1949. Those losses are genuine historical gaps, but several factors limit what they demonstrate.
First, the destroyed files were broad categories of administrative records rather than a known aircraft accident file. There is no evidence that a specific crash investigation once existed and was selectively removed.
Second, investigators searched many independent record systems outside Roswell itself. If a major military aircraft crash involving recovery operations had occurred, it would ordinarily have generated related records elsewhere, including accident investigations, headquarters correspondence, logistics, intelligence reporting or command communications. This illustrates an important historical principle: an incomplete archive creates uncertainty, but uncertainty alone does not establish a particular alternative explanation. Missing paperwork may prevent historians from reconstructing every administrative detail, yet it cannot by itself demonstrate that an undocumented aircraft carrying a crew crashed near Roswell.
Assessing the missing-crash claim
Within the broader history of UFO crash narratives, Roswell occupies an unusual position because genuine archival losses coexist with surviving records that point in a different direction.
The documentary evidence currently available supports three cautious conclusions:
