Introduction
One of the most enduring details in the Roswell story is the claim that fragments of the wreckage bore mysterious purple symbols or “hieroglyphs” unlike any known language. Yet one of the leading conventional explanations is remarkably ordinary: patterned adhesive tape used in the construction of radar reflectors. According to engineers connected with Project Mogul and later US Air Force investigations, decorative tape printed with floral or geometric motifs was used to reinforce lightweight radar targets. Decades later, witnesses recalling unusual coloured markings on broken debris may have remembered those patterns as an unknown script rather than as decorative printing. The floral pattern in the contemporary account
The proposed explanation centres on the radar reflectors carried beneath experimental balloon trains. These reflectors were assembled from paper-backed foil, thin wooden members and adhesive tape. Charles B. Moore, one of the New York University engineers involved in Project Mogul, later recalled that some of the seam tape bore pink or purple flower-like designs because it came from a toy or novelty manufacturer. In this interpretation, there was never any writing on the debris at all. Instead, there were repeated decorative shapes viewed on torn strips of tape after the reflector had broken apart.
How flowers became “alien writing”
The transformation from decorative pattern to extraterrestrial script did not occur immediately. From a historical perspective, the significance is not that witnesses invented the markings, but that they may have accurately remembered seeing coloured designs while later assigning them a different meaning.
Later memories of purple geometric markings
The best-known later accounts describe purple or violet symbols on narrow beam-like pieces recovered from the debris field. Jesse Marcel Jr., who said he briefly handled some fragments as a child, later reproduced markings that he believed resembled geometric symbols rather than flowers. These recollections differ in important ways from Moore’s description. Limits of the tape comparison
