Introduction
Glenn Dennis became one of the most influential figures in the Roswell UFO story because he supplied what earlier accounts largely lacked: a detailed narrative about recovered bodies, a military hospital and an alleged alien autopsy. A Roswell mortician, Dennis claimed that shortly after the 1947 incident he received unusual enquiries from Roswell Army Air Field about small, hermetically sealed coffins, encountered suspicious activity at the base hospital, and later heard from a military nurse who allegedly witnessed an autopsy on non-human bodies. These claims, first made publicly more than four decades after the event, became central to the modern Roswell mythology. The coffin and hospital allegations
Dennis worked for the Ballard Funeral Home in Roswell in 1947 and said the base hospital occasionally used the funeral home for mortuary services. According to his later testimony, he received several telephone calls from military personnel asking whether the funeral home could quickly supply small child-sized caskets and how bodies damaged by exposure could best be preserved without conventional embalming. Dennis further claimed that when he later delivered medical supplies to the hospital he found an unusually tense atmosphere. Military police allegedly prevented him from entering certain areas, senior officers appeared agitated, and medical staff seemed disturbed. Importantly, Dennis never claimed that he personally witnessed an alien autopsy. His own observations consisted of the reported coffin enquiries, activity at the hospital and conversations with military personnel. The alleged autopsy itself entered his account through another person.
The missing nurse problem
The most dramatic element of Dennis’s story centred on a military nurse whom he said was a personal acquaintance.
According to Dennis, the nurse later met him privately and described having been ordered to assist with or observe an autopsy on several small bodies unlike any human anatomy she had previously encountered. He said she sketched some anatomical features on paper before destroying the drawings, describing large heads, unusual eyes and internal organs that did not resemble human anatomy. This aspect of the account became the principal source for Roswell’s hospital-autopsy narrative. However, it also became the weakest point from an evidential perspective.
Researchers attempting to identify the nurse encountered major difficulties. Dennis eventually supplied the name “Naomi Maria Selff” (sometimes rendered “Self”), but military personnel records failed to identify a nurse by that name serving at Roswell Army Air Field during the relevant period. When challenged, Dennis later stated that the name had been intentionally altered to protect her identity rather than being her real name. The inability to establish the nurse’s identity has significant consequences. Without a verifiable witness, the alleged autopsy remains supported only by Dennis’s recollection of conversations rather than by direct testimony from someone claiming to have observed the event.
How later investigation tested the account
As Roswell investigations intensified during the 1990s, Dennis’s testimony received extensive scrutiny from both sceptical investigators and researchers sympathetic to UFO claims.
The United States Air Force devoted an entire section of its 1997 report The Roswell Report: Case Closed to Dennis’s account. Investigators examined personnel assignments, hospital staffing, military records and Dennis’s numerous interviews. They concluded that many details did not match documented events from July 1947. The report also argued that some individuals Dennis appeared to describe were associated with Roswell years after 1947. Memory, timing and credibility
The timing of Dennis’s public testimony has become a central issue in evaluating it.
His detailed account emerged around 1989, more than forty years after the alleged events and after Roswell had already become internationally famous through books, television programmes and public debate. By then, the broad outline of the modern Roswell narrative—including recovered craft, military secrecy and alien bodies—had become widely familiar.
Memory researchers have long noted that recollections formed or reconstructed over many decades can become influenced by later conversations, media exposure and repeated retelling. This does not necessarily mean a witness is intentionally deceptive, but it does make it more difficult to distinguish original memory from later interpretation. Another important distinction concerns firsthand versus secondhand evidence. Dennis personally claimed only indirect observations—the telephone enquiries, unusual hospital activity and military behaviour. The alleged alien bodies themselves depended almost entirely upon what the unidentified nurse supposedly told him afterwards.
Why Dennis remains important despite the evidential problems
Despite the unresolved problems, Dennis’s testimony profoundly shaped modern Roswell lore. Before his account became widely known, body-recovery stories associated with Roswell were comparatively sparse and often secondhand. Dennis supplied a vivid narrative connecting the debris recovery to a hospital, medical personnel, military secrecy and an alleged autopsy, creating a storyline that became deeply embedded in popular culture.
At the same time, subsequent investigations illustrate why historians and many UFO researchers treat the account cautiously. The absence of contemporary documentation, the inability to verify the nurse’s identity, inconsistencies identified through personnel records, and the decades-long delay before the claims surfaced all limit their evidential weight.
