Could military test dummies explain the later stories of alien bodies at Roswell? The answer is partly, but not completely. This explanation does not claim that a dummy crashed near Roswell in 1947. Instead, it proposes that memories from several separate events became merged over time. What the dummy-drop programmes involved

These were not simple mannequins. The dummies:

- Wore flight suits, helmets or pressure-equipment depending on the test.
- Were retrieved quickly by military recovery teams using trucks, aircraft and occasionally ambulances.

To civilians who unexpectedly encountered one of these operations, the activity could appear highly unusual. Secret Cold War research also meant personnel often restricted public access and avoided discussing what they were doing.
Which witness details the dummy theory may explain
The Air Force did not argue that every later Roswell witness described the same event. Rather, investigators suggested that recurring features of body-recovery stories resembled documented dummy operations surprisingly closely.
Several commonly reported elements match known recovery procedures:
- Small groups of military personnel securing an area before retrieving an object.
- Human-shaped figures lying on the ground.
- Bodies carried on stretchers by recovery teams.
- Transport in enclosed vehicles or crate-like containers.
- Large military response involving trucks, aircraft and security personnel.

Some witnesses also described pale, expressionless faces, rigid limbs or “plastic” skin. Why delayed memory matters
The strength of the dummy explanation depends less on physical resemblance than on what is known about long-term memory.
Many of the detailed Roswell body accounts were first recorded in the late 1970s through the 1990s, more than forty years after the original debris recovery. During that interval, witnesses had lived through decades of highly publicised military testing in New Mexico, extensive media coverage of Roswell, books, documentaries and repeated interviews.
The Air Force therefore proposed that people may have accurately remembered genuine recovery operations while unconsciously attaching those memories to the increasingly famous 1947 Roswell narrative. Where the theory does not fit
Although the dummy explanation accounts for some recurring features, it has important limitations.
Most importantly, the principal dummy programmes cited by the Air Force occurred years after 1947. Critics argue that events from the 1950s cannot literally explain observations made during the Roswell recovery itself.
The Air Force addressed this objection by arguing that the issue was not the date of the original incident but the date at which witnesses reported their memories. The theory also does not explain every individual claim. Some witnesses described child-sized beings rather than adult-sized figures, while others reported locations or circumstances that do not correspond well with documented dummy-drop sites. Likewise, witnesses who insist they observed bodies in July 1947 reject the idea that they were recalling events from the following decade. For them, the chronological gap is itself evidence against the Air Force’s interpretation.
Military accidents as an additional source of confusion
The 1997 Air Force report did not rely solely on test dummies. It also examined whether reports involving hospitals, casualties or covered bodies reflected genuine military accidents that occurred in later years.
Investigators specifically pointed to:
- a 1956 KC-97 aircraft crash in which eleven Air Force personnel died; and
- a 1959 balloon accident involving injured military aviators.
