Introduction
Many extraordinary UFO claims depend on the assertion that an object was travelling at impossible speed or accelerating beyond known aircraft performance. However, a video alone rarely provides enough information to support such a conclusion. The central missing quantity is usually distance. Without knowing how far away an object is, it is generally impossible to convert its apparent motion across an image into a reliable real-world velocity. A nearby slow-moving object and a distant fast-moving object can produce almost identical footage.
This is one reason NASA’s evidence standard for unidentified anomalous phenomena (UAP) places such emphasis on calibrated measurements, multiple sensors and complete metadata. Before a claim of extraordinary speed can be tested, investigators must first establish where the object was in three-dimensional space. Why distance controls every speed estimate
A camera records an object’s angular motion—how quickly it moves across the field of view—not its true speed through space.
To calculate physical velocity, investigators need at least:
- the object’s distance from the camera;

- the camera’s orientation and field of view;
- whether the camera itself was moving;
- the object’s direction of travel relative to the observer.
If the range is unknown, there is no unique answer. An object that shifts by one degree across the sky in one second could represent:
- a small bird flying nearby,
- a balloon drifting at moderate altitude,
- a distant aircraft,
- or another object entirely.
Each possibility produces a completely different true speed despite generating a similar image.
This limitation is well known in computer vision and photogrammetry. Monocular (single-camera) systems can estimate speed accurately only when the camera has been calibrated and scene geometry or distance is independently constrained. How parallax and camera motion create false acceleration
One of the most common sources of inflated speed estimates is parallax.
Parallax is the apparent shift in an object’s position caused by movement of the observer rather than movement of the object itself. Anyone looking through the window of a moving car has seen nearby trees appear to race past while distant hills barely seem to move. The trees are not travelling faster; their apparent motion results from geometry.
Exactly the same effect occurs when:
- a fighter aircraft turns,
- a helicopter changes heading,
- a drone manoeuvres,
- or a person pans a handheld camera.
If the recorded object is much closer than assumed—or much farther away than assumed—the apparent angular motion can be dramatically misinterpreted.
Camera systems add further complications:
- image stabilisation may move the frame independently of the target;
- zoom changes alter apparent motion;
- tracking software continuously adjusts pointing angles;
- rolling-shutter effects and video compression can distort motion between frames.
Unless investigators know precisely how the camera behaved during recording, separating target motion from camera motion becomes difficult.

Why famous UFO videos often produce competing speed estimates
Several widely discussed military videos illustrate the problem.
Analysts examining the same footage have sometimes reached very different conclusions about an object’s velocity because they begin with different assumptions about distance, altitude or geometry. Even when aircraft instrument readings are available, uncertainties remain over precisely what quantity each display represents and how the viewing geometry evolved during the recording.
The debate surrounding the US Navy’s “GOFAST” video demonstrates this difficulty. Different analyses have produced substantially different estimates depending on assumptions about range, wind, viewing angle and relative aircraft motion. The discussion itself illustrates an important methodological point: if reasonable assumptions produce widely different answers, the available evidence is not strong enough to support confident claims of extraordinary performance.

What measurements would make a velocity claim testable?
A scientifically testable speed estimate requires independent information beyond a single video.
The strongest evidence would include:
- Independent range measurements, such as radar, laser ranging or stereo imaging.
- Multiple synchronised sensors, allowing triangulation from different viewing positions.
- Calibrated camera parameters, including focal length, field of view and pointing direction.
- Complete metadata, such as timestamps, aircraft attitude, sensor mode and platform location.
- Environmental information, including wind, atmospheric conditions and visibility.
- Repeatable calculations that other researchers can independently verify.
When several independent measurements agree, investigators can calculate not only speed but also acceleration and associated uncertainties. Without those constraints, any numerical velocity remains heavily dependent on assumptions rather than direct measurement.
Why this matters for extraordinary UFO claims
Claims that a UFO demonstrated impossible performance often rest on inferred speed or acceleration. Yet extraordinary performance cannot be established from impressive-looking footage alone if the object’s distance is unknown.
From NASA’s scientific perspective, uncertainty in range propagates into uncertainty in every subsequent calculation. Size, speed, acceleration and even flight path become poorly constrained. This does not prove that an object was ordinary, nor does it prove that it was extraordinary. Instead, it means the available evidence cannot reliably discriminate between competing explanations.
For alleged UFO crashes, this distinction is especially important. If an object is claimed to have travelled at impossible speed before crashing, the supporting velocity estimate must be demonstrably reliable.
